Why LED Lighting?

LED (light-emitting diode) has been around since 1960s, but commercially available LED lighting has seen its exponential growth only since Noble prize winning inventor Shuji Nakamura's technology breakthrough in the 1990s, making it possible to produce the general-purpose required white LED light in a large scale. LED lighting is energy efficient, durable, safe, and most LEDs have an expected lifespan of 30,000 - 50,000 hours, and with the continuing cost dropping, no wonder LED lighting has found tremendous commercial, industrial and residential use.

In high-end custom cabinetry, LED lighting has evolved to provide both functionality and aesthetics. With a good design and the right budget, you can incorporate LED lighting in your custom cabinets, whether it's below or on top of your upper cabinets, under the toe kick, routed into side panels, or even integrated with your GOLA handle-less channels. The choices are endless!

Types of LED Lighting

There are many types of LED lighting for residential cabinetry. For the most high-end trendy look, we recommend Tape/Strip or the latest Flexible Silicone LED Lighting. Both types of LED lighting need to have custom cabinets to be pre-routed and a professional contractor for installation. We recommend Tresco Lighting's Strip or Silicone LED lighting products and we can provide LED lighting layout service in combination with our refundable custom design service.

LED Lighting for Custom Cabinetry

There are many places that you can incorporate LED lighting with your custom cabinetry and below are the common applications.

Under-cabinet led lighting

The most common use of LED lighting in the kitchen is located at the bottom of the upper wall cabinets, providing illumination of the counter space that is normally shadowed due to room lighting comes from the ceiling. At Domain Cabinets, we recommend using a separate door material LED bottom panel that is routed to accommodate strip or silicone LED lighting. The doors of the frameless custom cabinets are fabricated to be protruding down, allowing easy opening of the doors. Otherwise, you can use cabinet door pulls or tip-on push-to-open depending on your preference.

In-cabinet LED lighting

LED lighting can be added to multiple different places inside the cabinet box: vertical display on cabinet side panels, horizontal display on top panel, deck or shelf. Although traditionally a puck lighting shining from above was the popular go-to, the current high-end trend is to use silicon or strip LED Light and display them as thin bright straight lines with flush mount. Such LED lights are functioning as utility lighting AND as decorative lighting, especially when paired with clear glass doors.

Closet Led lighting

Nobody likes a dark closet, period. Because the latest LED technology allows for seamless bright illumination, LED lighting is a must have for high-end closet design.

Toe kick LED lighting

LED Lighting under the recessed tock kick section of the base and vanity cabinets is another popular way to add decorative accent lighting. It can also be an alternative to a night light. Strip LED light is the best choice in this application. Although not required, a filler strip with routed channel can be added as the strip LED lighting host.

Above-cabinet LED Lighting

Above-Cabinet LED Lighting

With the latest strip LED lighting that comes with strong peel-and-stick back, it is possible to simply position them on top of your wall and tall cabinets and hide the power supply out of sight. You can also use door material routed LED Top Panel to function as LED light host AND thin flat molding.

Floating Shelf LED Lighting

Floating shelf with LED lighting makes a great accent piece to any kitchen or room. LED lighting can be positioned on top or bottom of the floating shelf, either in the middle, or towards the front or back of the shelf.

Bookshelf LED Lighting

Similar to floating shelf and closet, custom open cabinet or bookshelf are increasingly designed with LED lighting in mind and they can be positioned in various ways to suite client's personal aesthetic taste without sacrificing the functionality.

GOLA LED Lighting

Several GOLA manufacturers have introduced latest GOLA channel profiles that incorporate LED lighting, and the result is a testimonio to the ultimate union of function, beauty and simplicity.
